Digital Pest Monitoring Launched in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan launches digital pest monitoring using intelligent pheromone traps in an apple orchard, enabling real-time data collection and forecasting to improve crop protection and potentially scale nationwide.

Kazakhstan has launched its first plant protection system based on intelligent pheromone traps with digital forecasting elements. The technology is being implemented in the Almaty region, in the apple orchard of the "Dikhan" farm, as part of a project by the Kazakh Research Institute of Plant Protection and Quarantine named after Z. Zhiembayev, in collaboration with Chinese partners. The system detects pests in real time and forms the basis for phytosanitary forecasting.

Data from the traps is transmitted online, enabling tracking of population dynamics and forecasting of the situation's development based on digital models. This ensures a transition to proactive management of phytosanitary risks with more precise determination of the timing and necessity of protective measures. The introduction of digital monitoring improves forecast accuracy, reduces the risk of crop losses, and allows for the optimization of plant protection product use. The technology is considered a universal solution and may in the future be adapted for other agricultural crops, including field and industrial crops.

If the pilot is successful, the system could be scaled up on farms across the country.
